Daniel Ainsworth hands out his ratings as Rovers crash out the FA Cup…
Aynsley Pears 4
Put simply. he should have done better with the goal. Not too bad otherwise, but doesn’t give the defence the same confidence as Kaminski, and that shows.
John Buckley 5
Had the right idea going forward but just didn’t have the final ball to make it count. Didn’t look too out of place at right-back.
Darragh Lenihan 5
Should have scored from six yards out, and was questionable defensively. Kept backing off as Richards put the visitors ahead.
Bradley Johnson 5
Was surprised to see him start over one of the young lads. Missed his physicality in the midfield at times. Defensively, he struggled to keep his position.
Amari’i Bell 4
Being withdraw at half-time showed how disappointing of a performance it was. Final ball just wasn’t there, and he missed a good chance to make a claim for the left-back spot.
Lewis Travis 4
Nothing like his usual self, and his time out was clear to see. Poor first touch and spent the time chasing rather than on the ball.
Stewart Downing 6 (MAN OF THE MATCH)
Was the only Rovers player who seemed to be able to control the ball in the middle. Showed his experience and class on the ball, and the team got worse as the match went on.
Tom Trybull 5
Won the ball back a couple of times, but his urgency on the ball was frustrating, with the German constant passing sideways. Another player who missed a chance to impress.
Tyrhys Dolan 5
Had what it takes to beat his man, but the final ball was missing. Was often left to do things on his own without support.
Ben Brereton 5
All the running but nothing came of it. Felt like he was just running for the sake of it in the end.
Bradley Dack 5
Not used correctly in this false nine system, and it was clear here. Didn’t get the ball often enough and was left feeding off scraps.
Barry Douglas (replacing Amari’i Bell, 46 minutes) 5
Got forward better than Bell but, as we’ve seen with other players in this match, the final ball was missing.
Joe Rothwell (replacing Lewis Travis, 58 minutes) 6
Used at times as a defensive midfielder, which was surprising to say the least. Good on the ball with his distribution.
Harvey Elliott (replacing Stewart Downing, 58 minutes) 6
Brought a bit of a spark to the Rovers side that was struggling to create anything. Clearly a step above.
Adam Armstrong (replacing Tom Trybull, 63 minutes) 5
A quiet time for Armstrong, who was thrown on as Rovers looked for an equaliser. Struggled to have any influence.
Jacob Davenport (replacing Bradley Dack, 72 minutes) 5
Was his usual self in the midfield but struggled to have any notable impact.
Unused Substitutes: Thomas Kaminski, Dan Pike, Joe Grayson, Sam Gallagher
