Ratings: Gallagher’s impact provides bright spark in otherwise disappointing night

Ryan Richardson hands out his player ratings as Rovers fall to defeat away to Huddersfield Town.

Thomas Kaminski 6

Another solid game from the Belgian. He could do nothing for either of the goals and he made some good saves throughout the game.

Ryan Nyambe 6

A much quieter game from the right back on his 150th appearance for the club. He struggled to create anything going down the right-hand side but did his defensive duties well before being subbed off.

Darragh Lenihan 4

Another game, another loss and more goals conceded under this man’s command. This defence can’t get through 90 minutes without gifting teams at least one easy chance, and he got a yellow card after a terrible touch.

Daniel Ayala 4

Seems to pick up a knock every time he plays, still looks slightly unassured in his decision making. Can’t help but feel he would be better suited playing on the right-hand side of centre half.

Amari Bell 5

Had a steady performance on his return to the starting line-up. He struggled to create much going forward – bar the late chance for Johnson – but didn’t do anything wrong at the back.

Tom Trybull 6

He started the game fairly well, but picked up a knock and was substituted after just 10 minutes.

Bradley Johnson 4

Completely lost Naby Sarr for the first goal giving him a free header. Dropped to centre half when Ayala went off injured.

Joe Rothwell 5

Struggled to get into the game and put his usual stamp on it. The ball was moved slowly as we had possession, which didn’t help Rothwell who often had to drop deep to get the ball.

Harvey Elliott 5

Was caught on possession a couple times tonight which was unlike him, and he struggled to use his wand of a left foot to create many chances.

Ben Brereton 7 (MAN OF THE MATCH)

One of the only strong performances from this game. Was a welcomed return to the starting XI, and he was full of running and driving at the defence and was able to win several free kicks in dangerous positions.

Adam Armstrong 6

Showed some strength trying to hold to ball up, and was unlucky not to put Rovers ahead in the first half, forcing an amazing save from Schofield in goal.

Lewis Holtby (replacing Tom Trybull, 11 minutes) 5

Just seemed like a bit of a ghost on the pitch. He was far too casual in possession and didn’t provide any sort of spark to create Rovers any chances.

Bradley Dack (replacing Harvey Elliott, 65 minutes) 5

Not sure he touched to ball more than twice, wasn’t able to get into the game and give the defence any problems.

Sam Gallagher (replacing Joe Rothwell, 65 minutes) 6

The forward was in the right place at the right time to score his fourth goal of the season. He just seems to make that bit of a difference coming off the bench.

John Buckley (replacing Ryan Nyambe, 66 minutes) 5

He did a decent job after being subbed on in a unfamiliar position. Marshalled the lively Lewis O’Brien and Harry Toffolo fairly well, but he struggled to create anything going forward.

Stewart Downing (replacing Daniel Ayala, 72 minutes) 5

Wasn’t able to impact proceedings in anyway.
