Rovers U18s recorded their third consecutive Premier League victory with a dramatic last-minute strike against Liverpool U18s.

In a match that saw both sides miss chances to take all three points, up stepped Georgie Gent to score an injury-time free-kick to hand Rovers the win.

Liverpool’s side featured Kaide Gordon, who had recently arrived from Derby County after making his senior debut earlier this season.

Rovers, meanwhile, had Zak Gilsenan in their line-up – who recently scored a hat-trick against Manchester United – as well as Alex Baker and Harrison Wood, with the duo both scoring for the last two matches.

Gordon almost had a dream start to life with the Premier League Champions as his cross was diverted goalwards by Rovers’ Jay Haddow, but it went narrowly past the post.

It was then Rovers’ turn to come close but Liverpool defender James Norris was there to clear.

A misplaced clearance from Rovers ‘keeper Aiden Dowling saw the ball fall to Dominic Corness but his first-time effort was off target.

Gilsenan then hit the woodwork on the half-hour mark as he got down the left flank well and his left-footed drive rattled the crossbar.

Both sides went into the break goalless, despite a host of chances for both sides.

Gent came close to opening the scoring early on in the second half, but his effort was tipped over the ball well by Fabian Mrozek in the Liverpool goal.

Mrozek then denied Gent against as the Rovers winger’s low strike was parried away and Liverpool cleared, before the hosts got forward well as Isaac Mabaya’s mazy run saw them win a corner, but nothing came of it.

Both sides pushed for a winner as the match moved into the final fifteen minutes as Gordon header over from Mabaya’s cross.

The match looked set to end goalless, until Gent stepped up with a free-kick three minutes into added time to secure all three points for Rovers.

It was a third consecutive victory for Mike Sheron’s young Rovers, who had recorded wins over Leeds (2-1) and Wolves (3-2) in recent weeks.

They face local rivals Burnley this Saturday, who Rovers beat earlier this season in their only other win before this three-match winning streak.
