Ratings: Brereton impresses but Elliott struggles in Reading defeat

As Déjà vu strikes again, Jonathan Secker hands out his player ratings following the 1-0 defeat to Reading.

Thomas Kaminski 6

Made a good save early on from Puscas.  Handled well throughout whilst trying to distribute quickly to get us on the front foot.

Seemed to have a lot of space on the right but never seemed to be utilised effectively or get behind his man enough – admittedly against a tough opponent in Richards.

Darragh Lenihan 6

Generally dealt well with Lucas Joao and George Puscas.  Put a header wide in the second half where he could have done better.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis 6

Grew into the game as it went on, looking calmer and more assertive but not a night where he was overstretched defensively.

Amari’i Bell 5

Saw plenty of the ball but again showed little end product. He was not over-troubled defensively.

Tom Trybull 5

Tidy and calm on the ball, but still too many sideways passes rather than trying to push the side forward.

Corry Evans 5

Thought he started well, getting involved a lot and taking up some good positions. Unfortunately, he’s not a player that will carve open defences and thus scarified after an hour.

Joe Rothwell 6

Involved a lot during the first half as he tried to push Rovers on.  One of a few players who have the ability to inject pace into our play so slightly surprised at his substitution – admittedly he needs to do more and take control.

Harvey Elliott 5

He had started the game well, but he was then involved in the pivotal moment of the game as he gave the ball away for Reading to score. Kept trying but it never really came off for him before being substituted after 70 minutes.

Ben Brereton 7 (MAN OF THE MATCH)

Our best attacking threat throughout the game, always wanting the ball and trying to progress the play.  Forced Rafael into a save in the second half.

Adam Armstrong 6

Involved quite a bit outside of the box in the first half. More opportunities came his way in the second half but he failed to trouble the Reading goal.

Bradley Dack (on 61 mins, replacing Joe Rothwell) 5

Still not quite there – encouraging touches outside of the box and wanting to get involved but still not looking a goal threat.

Stewart Downing (on 61 mins, replacing Corry Evans) 6

Composed on the ball as ever and put in a good cross where Lenihan should have done better.

Tyrhys Dolan (on 69 mins, replacing Harvey Elliott) 6

Injected some pace and energy into the final third, felt we could have given him the ball more.

John Buckley (on 84 mins, replacing Tom Trybull) N/A

A late sub for Trybull, little time to impact the game.

Barry Douglas (on 84 mins, replacing Amari’i Bell) N/A

Another late sub, this time for Bell, and he had little time to impact the game.
