Daniel Ainsworth highlights three talking points from Rovers’ victory over Derby County...

Scouting success

Much has been made of the European scouting set up since it was mentioned by Tony Mowbray, but the acquisition of Thomas Kaminski deserves full credit.

I’ve mentioned on a couple of occasions just how good of a signing he was, and I truly wonder where we would have been had someone like Christian Walton been between the sticks through this campaign.

Rovers have done one of their best pieces of business since relegation with Kaminski, and now, we need to tie him down to a long term contract and keep him as a key figure in this side in years to come.

The final four

With four matches left of the season, and Rovers’ Championship status seemingly secured for another season, I’d like to see a number of youth prospects and fringe players given minutes in the first team.

Connor McBride, Dan Pike and Sam Burns have all impressed for the U23s this season, and the likes of John Buckley and Jacob Davenport will be aiming to nail down their spots for the coming season. Giving these players a chance is the only way we’ll find out if they can be a regular part of the squad next season.

We spend millions and millions on the academy, and it is essential that we keep bringing these talents through. There’s nothing better than seeing an U23 player make the step up to become a first team regular – see Darragh Lenihan, Lewis Travis and Joe Rankin-Costello as three of many examples!

Looking ahead to next season

Linking with the aforementioned point, it is essential that Rovers begin their planning for the 2021-22 season, regardless of who is going to be at the helm come the beginning of the campaign.

It is pleasing to see contract talks have began with Scott Wharton, and hopefully, plenty more will follow as we have a number of talents at the club that need tying down.

Whoever is sat in the manager’s seat come the summer, I will back heading into the new season, but we need to give him the best foundations possible.
