Match Preview: Rovers U23s v Liverpool U23s

Rovers U23s will look to return to winning ways this evening as they take on Liverpool U23s at the County Ground.

Billy Barr’s side fell to only their fourth defeat of the season last time out, losing 2-1 away to Everton.

The result – coupled with Manchester City’s victory last week – means should Rovers fail to pick up all three points, the title will be won by ‘The Citizens’.

Managed by Barry Lewtas, Liverpool sit fifth in the PL2 table, two places and six points behind Rovers.

Forward Joe Hardy has five goals in his last three league appearances for the Merseyside club, including his brace in their away defeat at Manchester City U23s last time out (3-2).

Blackburn supporter Leighton Clarkson is likely to be involved for Liverpool, whilst Ben Woodburn – previously linked with Rovers – is likely to line-up alongside the aforementioned Hardy.

Team News

Dan Butterworth made his return to U23s action in the Everton defeat following an ankle injury, and the forward could be given more game time in this fixture.

Jordan Eastham and Antonis Stergiakis have shared the goalkeeping responsibilities this season, and the latter could return to the starting XI here.

Meanwhile, Luke Brennan remains out through injury.

Predicted XI: Stergiakis, Pike, Barnes, Annesley, Cirino, Garrett, Nolan, Butterworth, Durrant, McBride, Burns

This will be a tough match for Rovers against a Liverpool side with the fourth best points per game tally across the division.

However, Rovers ran out as winners in the reverse fixture and I’ll back them to do the same this time around.

Prediction: Rovers U23s 3-2 Liverpool U23s
