Verdict: An entertaining end to a disappointing season

As the curtain comes down on another season, Daniel Ainsworth gives his verdict on Rovers’ 5-2 victory over Birmingham City.

That’s it, another season done, and it has been one like no other. No fans at Ewood for the entire season was always going to be strange, but it feels like there has been even more ups and downs than before.

Realistically, it has also been a disappointing one for Rovers. A play-off challenge seemed on the cards after some impressive performances, but the dreams fizzled out pretty quickly from February onwards.

Rovers’ performance in today’s match sums up the season in some sorts. We have had the goals all season with Adam Armstrong’s incredible year, supplemented by the likes of Harvey Elliott and Ben Brereton, but the defensive frailties still exist.

Attacking wise, we saw what Rovers can do. The record-breaking Adam Armstrong popped up with his third hat-trick of the season, whilst Ben Brereton was a massive nuisance to the Birmingham defence.

The midfield trio of Lewis Travis, John Buckley and Jacob Davenport showed signs of promise and it could be the way we operate heading into next season.

But once again, the summer business will require defensive additions, which has been the same every year since promotion from League One.

We can’t underestimate how big of a summer this will be for Rovers. The likes of Corry Evans, Stewart Downing and Lewis Holtby were not standout players for us, but their experience counts for quite a bit and we need to replace that.

Let’s hope we’re heading into next season with some hope and optimism.

Stay safe, and enjoy your summer.
