Brereton Diaz at the double as Rovers draw at Bolton

Ben Brereton Diaz’s second half double saw Rovers come from two down to secure a draw in their final pre-season match.

A goal from George Johnston and an own goal from Hayden Carter gave the hosts a two-goal lead before Brereton’s brace saw the sides share the spoils.

It was a strong side from Rovers, using the same back five as they did in Wednesday’s draw with Leeds United, with Ben Brereton and Lewis Travis coming into the side for John Buckley and Jake Garrett.

Rovers started slowly with the hosts having the better of play, and they took the lead just before the half-hour mark as Johnston finished from Josh Sheehan’s cross.

Bolton deserved their lead at the break after controlling the half, in what was a disappointing 45 minutes for Mowbray’s side.

It got worse for Rovers after the break as Dapo Afolayan’s cross came off Hayden Carter and into the back of the net to double Bolton’s lead.

A quadruple substitution from Tony Mowbray – which saw John Buckley, Jake Garrett, Joe Rothwell and Sam Gallagher come on – helped Rovers spark into action.

Gallagher was involved soon after as his header hit the post, and Brereton was there to bundle home to give Rovers hope.

Seven minutes later, Brereton doubled his tally for the day – bringing Rovers level – as his left-footed effort gave Joel Dixon no chance.

Both sides had chances to win the match, but the score remained level as the sides both got in some vital minutes ahead of next week’s opening fixture.

Rovers kick-off their Championship season with a home fixture against Swansea City on Saturday at 3pm.
