Chris Heyes hands out his player ratings as Rovers draw at Middlesbrough…

Thomas Kaminski

Didn’t display his usual commanding authority and struggled with his distribution too. Not a great deal to do in the way of shot-stopping.

The first half yellow card put him on a tight rope for the rest of the game. Unfortunate to get his second yellow. Another strong display and looked far more comfortable in the centre of defence.

Darragh Lenihan

Along with Ayala, he dominated the aerial duels. Made some crucial challenges and rescued Kaminski from a Tavernier’s shot.

Daniel Ayala 9

Slowly running out of superlatives for the Spanish Man Mountain. Imperious in the air and as calm as you like on the ground. Man Of The Match

Harry Pickering 6

I feel like we’re still yet to see the best of Harry. Given a tough time by Dijksteel but defended admirably.

Lewis Travis 6

Won’t have many tougher afternoons than this. Worked tirelessly as usual but was left exposed far too often. Picked up a typical Trav yellow late on to halt a marauding Boro.

Leighton Clarkson 5

Not an ideal game for Leighton. Was outmuscled by the Middlesbrough midfield and showed very few glimpses of the talent he has.

Joe Rothwell 5

Saw very little of what Joe is about and was tactically substituted at half time. Had an opportunity to shoot late on in the first half but allowed the chance to fall to Brereton-Diaz.

Ian Poveda 6

A lively debut and one that wets the appetite. Once he settles in, he’ll be a more complete version of Dolan. Lovely assist for Gallagher’s goal.

Sam Gallagher 8

A constant problem for the Middlesbrough defence and maybe proved that if you play him in the middle he’ll score goals, maybe not as good as this one though.

Ben Brereton-Diaz 6

Looked a bit like the frustrating Brereton of old. Some moments of brilliance coupled with bad decisions and careless passing. Probably had to defend more than he would have liked.

Substitutes

Tyler Magloire 6 (replaced Joe Rothwell after 46 mins)

Came on at the break to play in the wing back role in order to nullify the threat Jones was posing. Performed admirably in an unfamiliar position.

Tyrhys Dolan 6 (replaced Ian Poveda after 60 mins)

The introduction of Dolan and Buckley helped wrestle back a bit of authority in the game. Gave it everything as usual and his fighting spirit even earned him a yellow card.

John Buckley 6 (replaced Leighton Clarkson after 60 mins)

If I’d have said last season that bringing Buckley on would add a bit of strength to the midfield, you’d have laughed at me, but that’s what he brought. A typical beautiful Buckley late pass to Brereton-Diaz nearly stole all three points.
