Club football returns as Rovers host The Hatters

With the first dreaded international break over and done with, it’s a return to club football as Luton Town visit Ewood.

An impressive opening month from Tony Mowbray’s men sees Rovers head into September sat in tenth, with just one defeat to their name.

The fighting spirit has been a key factor of the side so far this season, and that should continue throughout the season due to the strong squad mentality.

Rovers face a Luton side who sit two places and just one point below them in the league, and given the history of close matches between the two sides over the last couple of seasons, it will be a tough affair for the hosts.

In addition, Tony Mowbray will have to find a way to win without a number of players.

Ben Brereton Diaz’s availability is unclear at the time of writing with the club in talks with the Chilean FA and FIFA about potentially cancelling the pending five-day ban after Brereton Diaz was stopped from linking up with his international side over the break due to the Covid situation.

Hayden Carter will miss out through suspension, whilst deadline day signings Tayo Edun and Jan Paul Van Hecke are still working towards full fitness.

But, as usual, the missing players open up opportunities for other players to make an impression, including Dan Butterworth, who has been praised by Mowbray this week.

Speaking to the club website, Mowbray said: “Danny Butterworth’s a young guy who’s bursting at the seams to show everyone what a good player he is.

“We had some interest in Dan and he probably wouldn’t be here had we signed the forward we wanted to sign on deadline day.”

Predictions

Predicted XI: Kaminski, Nyambe, Lenihan, Ayala, Pickering, Travis, Rothwell, Clarkson, Poveda, Butterworth, Gallagher

This is a tough one to call!

I do think Rovers will have too much for Luton over the ninety minutes, but we have struggled over the last two seasons against the Hatters.

I’ll go for a narrow Rovers win.

Predictions: Rovers 2-1 Luton Town
