Rovers show a side we all want to see in Bristol draw

Daniel Ainsworth provides his verdict as Rovers pick up a point on the road with a 1-1 draw at Bristol City…

A return to club football is always welcomed after the dreaded international break, and returning with an away day is the perfect tonic for me.

Rovers made the trip to Ashton Gate to face a Bristol City side with just one win in 17 matches at home, but the Robins’ strong performance and a disappointing half from the visitors saw Mowbray’s men trail at the break.

Being behind was what Rovers deserved at the break, but after changing to a back-five when Daniel Ayala come on, it tightened up the defence and helped the side deal with Bristol’s obvious aerial threat.

On a side note, Ian Poveda – who was replaced by Ayala – left the pitch on a stretcher following a challenge, and I’d like to wish him all the best in his recovery. It is such a shame as the Leeds loanee was just starting to show his quality, and hopefully he comes back stronger.

The back five allowed Rovers to gain a hold on the match and that paid off towards the end as Ben Brereton Diaz fired home from a tight angle to secure a point.

As the title references, this is the side of Rovers that we like to see.

Of course, the ideal is a solid performance in which we blow the opposition away, but we know that isn’t always going to happen and taking a point when far from your best is always a positive.

It’s universally seen as the aspect of a ‘good side’, and hopefully, we can add the performances to that in the coming week.

A week coming up that sees struggling Peterborough visit Ewood before another away trip to Stoke sees Rovers presented with the chance to close the gap on the top six, and five points or more from this three-game week would definitely be seen as a strong seven days.

One loss in five is a positive as well, despite the manner of the defeat, and now Rovers will look to continue that good form under the Ewood lights this week.

Thanks for reading.
