2022 kicked off with a hard fought 0-0 home draw with in-form play-off rivals Huddersfield.  In a game where defences were on top, Jonathan Secker hands out his player ratings.

Thomas Kaminski 7

Very little to do but made one vital save to keep the scores level. He will enjoy the clean sheet and playing in front of a back five that protects him so well.

Another solid outing for Rhino. But, as I said after the Barnsley match, quality in the final third needs to improve but again was defensively sound.

Darragh Lenihan

Marshalled the back five well in difficult conditions. Seems at home on the right of the three defenders with his distribution out from the back becoming key to how we play.

Jan Paul van Hecke 8

What a signing Jan Paul is proving to be. He loves a header and loves a tackle. Deserves to keep Ayala out of the team at the moment.

Scott Wharton 8

Consistently good each week and looks like an old head who has played 100+ games for Rovers. Cool and composed on the ball, going about his job with the minimum of bother. Man Of The Match.

Harry Pickering 7

Fastly becoming Mr Consistent for Rovers. Offers an option on the left when pushing forward and defensively resilient when required. He was in for man of the match until an injury forced him off with 20 minutes to go.

Lewis Travis 7

The sort of game Trav loves – plenty of chances to get stuck in, make a tackle and break-up play.  Showed maturity in his play after a first half booking.

Joe Rothwell 7

Prominent in the first half with his trademark runs from deep kicking off numerous attacking situations. His set piece delivery was mixed.

John Buckley 6

A blistering start again from Bucko and could have easily had an assist when playing Khadra through. Decision making could have been better – shooting when he should have passed and vice versa but a massive part in how we play.  His influence waned as the game progressed.

Reda Khadra 7

Lively display by the on-loan Brighton man. It may sound harsh, but I felt he should have scored with his early chance.  A constant threat and can feel unlucky to be substituted.

Ben Brereton Diaz 6

A quiet day at the office for our main man – starved off space, service, and opportunities. He will be frustrated not to win a penalty or free kick when he appeared to be fouled whilst bearing down on goal at the end of the first half.

Substitutes

Sam Gallagher 5 (replaced Reda Khadra after 63 mins)

Saw a glancing header cleared late on. He was frustrating we didn’t go more direct and pump balls into the box to him for the last 15 minutes.

Tayo Edun 5 (replaced Harry Pickering after 67 mins)

Came on for the injured Pickering to occupy the left back spot. An able replacement who was keen to get involved and push the team forward.

Tyrhys Dolan 5 (replaced John Buckley after 73 mins)

Always keen to get on the ball but just lacked the bit of quality in the final third. Great tracking back towards the end when he was cynically brought down by Holmes.
