Ratings: How the Rovers players performed in the defeat at Wigan

Daniel Ainsworth hands out his player ratings as Rovers exit the FA Cup…

Aynsley Pears 4

Felt for Aynsley here, who returned to the side after time on the bench following the impressive run of performances when Kaminski was out. The first goal for Wigan saw Pears’ confidence drop, and it showed with the other two goals. Important that this game is put out his mind.

Surprised to see him in at right wing-back and the winger did struggle. The first-half booking limited his influence on the match afterwards.

Darragh Lenihan 7

A solid first-half performance and it was a shame to see him withdraw at half-time due to a knock. Hopefully it is not too serious.

Jan Paul van Hecke 6

Got forward well but he did struggle at times at the back. Appeared to take a knock and that did limit his influence.

Daniel Ayala 7

Strong enough defensively, especially aerially, and he rose highest to nod home the equaliser. A great option to have as back-up to the usual back three.

Tayo Edun 6

Defensively, Edun did well enough but he just doesn’t have the attacking ability of Pickering, which is something we will miss in his absence. Final ball was lacking.

Lewis Travis 6

The tough tackling performance is what we expect from Travis, and he brought the ball forward well but without end product.

Joe Rothwell 7

Rovers’ best chance of getting anything out the match as he strode forward numerous times. Always influential and he keeps showing the end product we’ve all craved.

John Buckley 6

He was often on the ball early on and showed his passing range off. Opposite to the Barnsley match, he should have passed when through on goal.

Sam Gallagher 5

Struggled to get on the ball before he was withdrawn due to injury, much to his frustration but worth it in the long run.

Ben Brereton 5

Wasn’t involved in the match too much and gave away the ball for Wigan’s opening goal. Feel like he should have been rested.

Substitutes

Reda Khadra 7 (replaced Sam Gallagher after 31 mins)

Influential off the bench and opened the scoring with a well taken goal. Really coming into his own at Rovers.

Bradley Johnson 5 (replaced Darragh Lenihan after 46 mins)

Sloppy passing out from centre-back and he just didn’t look comfortable.

Dan Butterworth 6 (replaced John Buckley after 69 mins)

A livewire as always and that first goal is just around the corner. Another positive display.

Thanks for reading.
